Entrance Systems (Automatic Doors)

CSI Division 08, Openings

Automatic and manual entrance door systems, sliding, swinging, and revolving doors with their operators and safety sensors, engineered and installed to a specific performance and safety standard, ANSI/BHMA A156.10 for automatic doors, governing sensor coverage and force limits, distinct from standard [[concept-door-hardware|door hardware]] since these are complete, code-regulated assemblies.

Why it matters

An automatic entrance door's safety sensors have to be field-tested and adjusted after installation to confirm they actually detect a person in the door's path and stop or reverse, since a misadjusted sensor turns a convenience feature into a genuine pinch or impact hazard.

On a real project

An installer commissions an automatic sliding entrance door by testing its presence sensors at multiple points across the opening, confirming the door reverses reliably before it can strike someone crossing through at a normal walking pace.

Who this matters most to

A specialty door installer sets and commissions automatic entrance systems. A Commissioning Agent may independently verify sensor performance as part of overall building commissioning.

Where this goes wrong

An installer sets an automatic entrance door's sensor sensitivity too low to reduce nuisance triggering from nearby foot traffic outside the doorway. The reduced sensitivity means the door doesn't reliably detect someone moving through it at a normal pace, and it strikes a visitor before the installer is called back to properly recalibrate it.
