Milestone
A specific, significant point in a project schedule, like [[concept-substantial-completion|substantial completion]] of a phase, or a major system going live, used as a checkpoint for tracking progress, often tied to a contract payment or a deadline with real consequences.
Why it matters
A schedule with hundreds of individual tasks is hard for anyone outside the scheduling team to follow. Milestones translate that detail into a handful of dates that owners, lenders, and project leadership can actually track progress against.
On a real project
A hotel renovation contract sets milestones for "Phase 1 floors complete," "Phase 2 floors complete," and "final substantial completion," each triggering a specific payment to the contractor and, on the last one, the start of the warranty period.
Who this matters most to
A Scheduler builds milestones into the schedule as key tracking points, often tied directly to contract terms. A Project Manager reports progress against milestones to the owner regularly, since they're usually the dates the owner actually cares about, more than the hundreds of individual tasks underneath them.
Where this goes wrong
A project manager reports that the project is "on track" based on overall percent-complete, without flagging that a specific contractual milestone, a partial occupancy date the owner needs for move-in planning, is actually at risk. The milestone is missed with no advance warning, damaging trust even though the project as a whole wasn't far behind.
