The custom-fabricated steel and aluminum items on a project that don't fall under structural steel as their own scope, stair stringers and handrails, ladders, guardrails, embedded steel plates and angles, and similar shop-fabricated pieces, each typically built to project-specific shop drawings rather than off a standard catalog.
Why it matters
Because miscellaneous metals items are custom shop-fabricated rather than stock catalog products, they carry real lead time and depend on accurate field dimensions, a late or wrong measurement can hold up an item a general contractor assumed would simply show up when needed.
On a real project
A general contractor submits a custom embedded steel plate's shop drawings to the fabricator well ahead of the concrete pour it needs to be cast into, giving the fabricator enough lead time to turn the piece around before the pour date on the schedule.
Who this matters most to
An Ironworker or specialty metals installer sets miscellaneous metal items in the field, working from the fabricator's approved shop drawings.
Where this goes wrong
A general contractor assumes a custom embedded steel plate will simply show up when needed and doesn't get shop drawings to the fabricator until the concrete pour is already scheduled. The fabricator can't turn around custom shop drawings and fabrication in the time remaining, and the pour has to be delayed a week waiting on a miscellaneous metals item nobody flagged as a long-lead custom fabrication.
