Doors made of interlocking horizontal slats that coil up into a drum above the opening, used for loading dock openings, warehouse bays, and service openings, available in manually operated, motorized, and fire-rated versions, the fire-rated versions required to close automatically on a fire alarm signal to maintain a fire-rated wall's separation.
Why it matters
A fire-rated overhead coiling door has to be tested regularly to confirm it actually closes automatically when triggered, since a door that's been chained open or has a malfunctioning drop-out link for convenience defeats the entire purpose of the fire-rated wall it sits in.
On a real project
A warehouse's fire-rated overhead coiling door between two fire-separated areas is tested during commissioning to confirm it releases and closes fully when the fire alarm system signals it, not just when someone manually triggers the release mechanism.
Who this matters most to
An Electrician or specialty door installer wires the fire-rated door's automatic release mechanism to the fire alarm system. A Commissioning Agent verifies it actually closes on signal before turnover.
Where this goes wrong
Warehouse staff chain a fire-rated overhead coiling door partially open during regular operations to speed up forklift traffic, defeating its automatic closing function. A fire inspector discovers the chain during a routine inspection, and the facility has to correct the life-safety violation before it passes.
