Supplement (Claims)
An additional claim submitted to an insurer after the original scope of loss was approved, covering damage that was hidden, discovered mid-repair, or otherwise missed during the initial inspection, the insurance claim world's version of a [[concept-change-order|change order]].
Why it matters
Concealed damage (behind drywall, under flooring, inside a wall cavity) is common enough in restoration work that supplements aren't unusual exceptions, they're a routine part of the process, and a contractor who doesn't document and submit them promptly risks doing extra work without ever getting paid for it.
On a real project
During demolition for a water damage repair, a contractor discovers additional mold growth behind a wall that wasn't visible during the original inspection, documents it with photos, and submits a supplement request to the insurer before proceeding with that additional scope.
Who this matters most to
A Restoration Project Manager documents concealed damage the moment it's found and prepares the supplement request before covering the area back up. An Insurance Adjuster reviews supplement requests against photo documentation to confirm the additional damage is both real and actually related to the original covered loss.
Where this goes wrong
A restoration crew discovers additional water damage during demolition but keeps working without pausing to document it or submit a supplement request, assuming it will get sorted out later. By the time the supplement is submitted, the area has already been repaired, and the insurer disputes paying for work it can no longer independently verify.
