Blinds, shades, and drapery systems specified and installed as part of a building's furnishings package, either manually operated or motorized and tied into a [[concept-building-automation-system|building automation system]], coordinated against window sizes and, for motorized units, low-voltage wiring that has to be roughed in before walls close.
Why it matters
Motorized shades need power and control wiring run to each window head before drywall closes the wall, an easy detail to miss if window treatments aren't finalized until late in the design process.
On a real project
An office building specifies motorized roller shades tied into the building automation system, and the electrician roughs in low-voltage wiring to each window head before the ceiling and wall finishes go in.
Who this matters most to
An Electrician roughs in the low-voltage wiring motorized units need. A Facilities Manager operates and maintains the system after occupancy.
Where this goes wrong
Window treatments aren't finalized until after walls are already closed in, and the owner later selects motorized shades that need control wiring nobody roughed in. The fix requires surface-mounted conduit that wasn't part of the original design intent.
