Construction-specific compliance knowledge: certified payroll and prevailing wage for accounting and payroll roles, lien law and subcontract administration for contracts roles, OSHA and jobsite safety familiarity for HR. Construction-specific software named directly, Procore, Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, rather than generic "ERP experience." A resume that reads like it could be for any industry, with zero construction context, signals to a reviewer that you don't yet understand what's actually different about construction back-office work.

Lead with the construction-specific part of your background even if your title sounds generic elsewhere, "Payroll Specialist, Construction" reads differently than plain "Payroll Specialist." Name the compliance areas and software you've actually worked in. One to two pages depending on seniority, structured the same way a corporate resume in your function normally would be, just with the construction-specific substance made visible rather than assumed.

Purely generic corporate HR, accounting, or procurement language with no construction context anywhere in it. Vague claims like "ensured compliance" without naming which regulation or process (certified payroll, lien waivers, prevailing wage) you were actually ensuring compliance with. And don't bury a real credential, a CPA license, SHRM certification, or payroll certification belongs near the top, not at the very bottom.
