What is a Value Engineering Consultant?

A Value Engineering Consultant leads formal value engineering studies, a structured process for finding ways to deliver a project's required function at lower cost, brought in independently of the design and construction team specifically so the analysis isn't biased by whoever already made the original decisions. It's a distinct skill from a Cost Engineer or Estimator's day-to-day cost management: value engineering is a facilitated, team-based methodology with its own certification track, typically used at key decision points on larger projects rather than as an ongoing part of running the job.

What they do

• Facilitate structured value engineering workshops with owners, designers, and contractors
• Analyze a project's cost and function relationship to identify high-cost, low-value items
• Develop and present alternative design or construction approaches that preserve required function at lower cost
• Document value engineering proposals and their projected cost impact for owner decision-making
• Track which proposals get implemented and their actual cost savings
• Train project teams on the value methodology for use on future projects

A typical day

• 8:00 AMReview project cost data and drawings to prepare for an upcoming value engineering workshop
• 9:30 AMFacilitate a value engineering workshop with the owner's design and construction team
• 1:00 PMDevelop a cost comparison for an alternative structural system proposed in the workshop
• 2:30 PMPresent value engineering proposals and their projected savings to the project owner

Required:

Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management, plus several years of design or construction experience; no license is legally required for this role

Preferred:

SAVE International's Certified Value Specialist (CVS) credential, the organization's highest certification level, which requires completing SAVE's value methodology training and meeting the organization's experience and application requirements

Not necessary:

A cost estimating background specifically; value engineering draws on broader design and construction experience across many project types
