Large, movable wall panels, often accordion-folding or panel-track systems, that slide open or closed to divide or combine adjacent rooms, such as a hotel ballroom or a school cafeteria, typically suspended from an overhead track that has to be designed into the structure above rather than added after the fact.
Why it matters
Operable partitions are heavy, and the overhead structural support their track hangs from has to be coordinated with the structural engineer early in design, retrofitting adequate support into an already-built structure is far more disruptive than designing for it up front.
On a real project
A hotel's ballroom is designed around a structural steel beam sized specifically to carry the weight of an overhead operable partition track, coordinated between the structural engineer and the partition manufacturer during design.
Who this matters most to
A Structural Engineer sizes the overhead support the track hangs from. A Carpenter or specialty installer sets the track and panels.
Where this goes wrong
A general contractor installs an operable partition track using the structural support shown in the original drawings, only to discover during installation that the manufacturer's actual selected unit weighs significantly more than what the structural engineer designed for, requiring a structural retrofit mid-project.
