What is a Drywall Installer & Finisher (Taper)?
A Drywall Installer (hanger) and Finisher (taper) install gypsum board on walls and ceilings, then tape, mud, and sand the joints to create a smooth, paint-ready surface. Hanging and finishing are sometimes done by the same person and sometimes split into two specialties on larger crews. No government license is legally required to do this work.
What they do
- Measure, cut, and hang drywall panels on walls and ceilings per the framing layout
- Install corner bead and other trim components at edges and openings
- Apply joint tape and multiple coats of joint compound ("mud") over seams and fasteners
- Sand finished joints smooth and check the wall under raking light for imperfections
- Coordinate with framers, electricians, and plumbers to make sure rough-in work is complete before hanging
- Repair damaged drywall on renovation and remodel projects
A typical day
- 7:00 AMReview the day's layout and confirm framing and rough-in inspections are complete
- 7:30 AMMeasure, cut, and hang drywall panels on a section of wall or ceiling
- 10:30 AMApply the first coat of joint compound over taped seams from the previous day
- 1:00 PMSand a previously mudded section and check it under raking light for flaws
- 2:30 PMApply a finish coat to seams ready for their final pass

Education
- Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent. No license is legally required to work as a drywall installer or finisher
- Preferred:
- On-the-job training or a formal apprenticeship
- Helpful:
- Specialized training in fire-rated or acoustic assembly installation for commercial work
- Not necessary:
- A college degree; this trade is learned almost entirely on the job
