PMP (Project Management Professional)
Project Management Professional (PMP)
A widely recognized project management credential (not construction-specific, but common on senior construction PM job postings), rebalanced in 2026 toward business judgment and away from process mechanics.
The current PMP exam is 180 questions over a 240-minute session (with two built-in 10-minute breaks), built from a content outline PMI significantly rebalanced in July 2026 based on a Job Task Analysis of how the role has actually changed, not a new PMBOK Guide edition. The three domains shifted hard toward business judgment: People dropped from 42% to 33% of the exam, Process from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment nearly tripled from 8% to 26%, much of that growth pulled from process-mechanics content (change management, risk management) now framed as business-judgment questions instead. The exam also leans further into interactive formats beyond plain multiple-choice, matching, point-and-click, and detailed case-based scenarios, specifically to test applied judgment rather than memorized definitions, and it tests project management across predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches (roughly 40% predictive, the rest split across agile and hybrid), which matters for a construction PM used to thinking mostly in waterfall terms.
Getting to sit the exam takes more than studying: PMI requires a combination of education and documented project management experience (more experience required at lower education tiers, from a high school diploma up through a PMI Global Accreditation Center degree), plus 35 hours of project management training, which a current CAPM credential partly satisfies. PMI doesn't publish a fixed passing score, results come back domain-by-domain against a criterion-referenced standard, and a first miss isn't fatal since up to three attempts are allowed within your one-year eligibility window.
Unlike the OSHA and NCCER credentials elsewhere on this site, the PMP isn't construction-specific, but it's common on senior construction PM job postings precisely because the discipline (budget ownership, risk management, stakeholder communication) maps directly onto what a construction Project Manager already does day to day.
Budget for more than just the exam fee. As of August 2026, PMI charges $445 to sit the exam if you're a member and $675 if you're not, and a retake (if you need one) runs roughly $275 for members and $375 for non-members. PMI membership itself costs around $139 a year plus a small one-time application fee, and it usually pays for itself through the lower exam price alone, on top of member access to study resources and local chapter events. You can sit the exam either at a physical Pearson VUE test center or as an online proctored exam from home through Pearson's OnVUE software; both use identical questions and security standards, so the choice comes down to which setup you trust more, not which one counts for less.
Passing isn't the finish line. PMI requires 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) over a rolling three-year Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) cycle to keep the PMP active, with a minimum number earned through formal Education activities and the rest allowed through Giving Back activities like volunteering or mentoring, plus a renewal fee at the end of the cycle. And before any of that, your original application faces a random chance of being selected for PMI's audit process, PMI doesn't publish the exact odds, though outside estimates commonly put it somewhere between 5 and 20 percent, which means submitting a signed experience verification from a supervisor, proof of your education, and documentation of your 35 hours of project management training within a set window, typically cited as 90 days. It's a paperwork check, not a re-test, and keeping decent records from the start is the whole defense against it.
The practice questions below are original, written to test the same kind of applied judgment the real exam does under its current 2026 content outline, not a copy of any real PMI question. If you're earlier in a project-management track, without the professional experience the PMP requires yet, the CAPM exam is the entry-level version of this same credential family.
